“All adventurous women do”. That’s how Hannah, of Girls, tried to romanticize her HPV scare in a tweet. HPV is human papilloma virus and yes, of course I googled that, I ain’t that smart and I’ve never heard about HPV until yesterday. The idiot box could be gerbang informasi sometimes you know. To speak in laymen term, HPV causes genital warts. Real scary. Funny, funny business down there. I shall not go into details.
Anyways, Girls, yeah, I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. I mean, I enjoy watching the show and yet, I don’t really like it. The script is good and all but the characters aren’t too likable, even the main girl Hannah isn’t. I thought she’s gonna be another Betty, you know, the underdog that you root for despite their humble appearance and awkward social skill. But no, not Hannah. She’s an immature (who I can say is suffering from arrested development) English Lit grad (aspiring writer of course) who got cut off money by her parents (because her mom wants a lake house) and having lived a privileged life her whole 22 years of being, she’s naturally too lazy to get a job. Go freaking be a waiter or something! (Fact: I have a secret ambition to be a waiter in NY, I don’t know why). She ain’t lovable but you kinda feel for her lah, in a kesian and relatable sort of way. Macam mana entah.
So I thought OK maybe I will like Hannah’s bestie Marnie. I don’t. She’s almost as annoying as Nur Amina’s best friend (of Nur Kasih) played by Nur whatsherface Fathia. Marnie is another privileged urbanite; uptight and never is nice to her super loving ‘man with vagina’ boyfriend Charlie. And the guys, they are all either sleazy or boring or douchebags. Yikes. I quite like Jessa though, the British free spirit. Maybe it’s her accent that does it for me.
I have another 5 episodes to watch and I’ll write again if my opinion has changed. But as of now, a critic has aptly summarize my sentiment of the show, that it is “a tough show to love, but not easy to hate either.”
Oh and like many HBO series, it contains lotsa nudity. Some are very gross (and awkward) too. You’ve been warned.
