“Dua jiwa yang sebati tak mudah dileraikan”
Sounds cheesy? Kinda. But wait. Do not judge just yet. Read on. Kali pertama aku dengar bahawa Istanbul Aku Datang didukung Tomok and Lisa Surihani, I immediately got skeptical and dismissed it from my must-watch-Malay-movies list. But then I found out that it was brought by the team behind Gol & Gincu and Pisau Cukur (the awesome and talented Bernard and Rafidah). And then I watched the colourful trailer and saw that Beto is in it too. I was intrigued. So I watched it yesterday on its public opening day and man, did I enjoy myself!
If you want intelligent review that goes into the depth of the movie, read Tonton Filem’s review HERE. I’m just gonna write what I feel, mostly to get them out of my system. Heh. The movie, like most romcoms, has simple plot, but intriguing nevertheless. The cinematography was splendid, no surprise considering that it was entirely shot in the magnificently beautiful Istanbul. I like that Bernard’s movies are always colourful and fresh and that he obviously got an eye for details! As always, I have major crush on Rafidah’s brilliant script; modern, not at all cheesy and mostly witty.
Jadi bagaimana dengan Lisa Surihani sebagai Dian? I was never a fan of her acting before and I understand if many wouldn’t want to watch Istanbul Aku Datang sebab tak berkenan dengan Lisa. I mean I like her as Lisa the pretty and smart girl, Lisa the Yusry’s wifey, but no, not Lisa the actor. Lisa in Lagenda Budak Setan, Ombak Rindu, Sekali Lagi, Papa I Love You; all sucked. But she did well here, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s either this kind of cutesy role suits her or that Bernard did what Shuhaimi Baba did to Maya Karin, he transformed her. Hanya selepas 10 minit Istanbul bermula, I already went “Comelnya Lisa, comelnya Lisa!” and drove hubs crazy. Hah.
Tomok was well, Tomok. He played Azad, the boyfriend; nothing too great yet nothing too poyo. But Beto Kusyairy was his usual awesome self as Harris. And his chemistry with Lisa was believable! I get that he’s not conventionally handsome, unlike maybe Remy Ishak and Aaron Aziz, but he’s cute in his own way and man, this guy can really act. I have never read any complaint by anyone on his acting chops. He is what we girls would call sesuatu; that is when you can’t really pinpoint what’s so cool about him but yeah, he’s cool.
It might not be your cup of tea but I enjoyed it. I can’t remember the last time that I actually liked a Malay romcom (they’re usually filled with cheesy scenes and even cheesier lines), but this one I do. People are surely gonna remember that Maggie Asam Laksa reference for a long time. Super cute. All in all, I agree completely with Tonton Filem that yes people of the industry, take note, “Beginilah kalau nak buat romcom”!
