"I love my mother as the trees love water and sunshine - she helps me grow, prosper, and reach great heights." - Terri Guillemets
My mother and I are as different as night and day. While I shy away from attention, she loves it. Example? She has no qualms about menyumbangkan satu dua lagu at a public event. She likes it. You want me to do that? Give me at least 1K, then we’ll discuss about it. But to be fair (to me), she is a good singer, she even used to enter singing contest all the time back in her anak dara days. I couldn’t even sing to save my life.
Did you know she’s an awesome athlete too? She used to play all kind of sports and is now obsessed with her aerobic, bowling and what not. Aku? I’m the worst kaki bangku you’ll ever know. Bowling pun aku tak main; “The ball is too berat for my tiny hands” is my famous excuse.
My mom is a passionate social worker and the only ‘social work’ I do is my monthly potong gaji contribution to one kids charity organization. I’m just too lazy for all that. My mom can sew just about anything; letak satu gambar depan dia and voila, the dress will be ready. She sewed my Nikah dress, which I love wholeheartedly and my flower girls dresses too. And me, the only sewing I do is jahit butang baju. The sewing machine and I, we just have no chemistry.
Mom loves chatting up to strangers, yes she does! Strangers in the elevator, at the mall, in the surau, at the sundry shop, strangers anywhere! She’s super friendly like that. I am so not! Like most super friendly and super ceria people (people who project extreme emotion, if you get what I mean), my mom is super penyedih too. Aku much much more macho in that sense. Oh she cried 2-3 times the 2 times she watched Ombak Rindu while aku tak ada perasaan sedihpun.
My super bubbly Ibu loves super bright colours; red, turqoise, fuchsia, orange, you name it, she loves all ‘em bright colours. I feel awkward in those colours, which is why you almost always see me in black, blue, brown, all the boring earth tones. Fashion wise boleh kata, she’s more adventurous. She likes dressing up, putting on pretty make up with matching handbags and shoes, smelling so harum macam she just stepped out from perfume bath. Again I’m just too lazy for all that. I’m such a simple girl.
Oh she likes fancy stuffs too. While my current iPhone cover is white with pastel polka dots, hers is bling bling bling of silver and bright blue diamante. While my house curtain is greenish brown with no fancy details, hers are red with the heaviest scallops and fanciest frills. My dad pernah cakap, “Kalau nak beli barang untuk Ibu, beli yang Yanti paling tak suka”, because our tastes are just too different. Hehehe.
Sebenarnya banyak lagi our differences but yeah, it doesn’t matter pun. What matters, she brought me into this world, cares for me, teaches me so many things I know and loves me unconditionally. I am forever indebted in so many ways. We may be miles apart most of the time but I miss her all the time we’re away and enjoy every moment that we get to be together. Happy birthday Ibu, thank you for the 30 years of your life spent as my mother. I love you more than you’ll ever know.
